Caroline Darian, Gisele Pelicot's Daughter, Is No Longer Speaking to Her Mother

Caroline Darian, daughter of Gisèle Pelicot, broke off all contact with her mother after the trial of her father Dominique Pelicot, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison for drugging, raping and having his wife raped by other men. During the trial, Caroline, who claims to have also been abused by her father, felt betrayed by her mother, who refused to believe her accusations despite the discovery of compromising photos of her on Dominique's computer. She blames Gisèle for abandoning her, for never trying to get her husband to confess and for silencing her when she expressed her pain. While Gisèle has become a media figure and a symbol of victimhood, Caroline says she feels like a ‘forgotten victim’. For her, her mother is not a heroine. Today, she only addresses her with distant pleasantries and believes that Gisèle failed in her role as a mother. -- File photo - Gisele Pelicot’s children Caroline Darian (R) and David arrive at the courthouse for a hearing in the trial of Dominique Pelicot accused of druggi

Living in Yuhu village at the foot of the Yulong Snow Mountain, He Jielin has witnessed the changes in this ancient Naxi village. From the 1980s to 1990s, He Jielin and his wife could only live off the land. Like other villagers, the couple made a living by cutting wood, picking medicinal materials and digging sand, which resulted in great damages to the forest and the environment. However, people in the village remained poor. In 2004, as the village started to develop tourism, He Jielin began to raise horses and cattle, founded home inns, and gradually, his living condition was improved. In June 2020, He Jielin renovated his old residence, turning it into the village's first museum on Naxi ethnic culture. Beyond Our Bodies

Beyond Our Bodies

Serwah plays in the heavy anti colonial band Dispossessed and is also a multidisciplinary artist. Stanmore, Australia, 2017 'I think femininity is different for everybody. I’ve been doing a lot of research about the Akan tribe that is my father’s tribe in Ghana. It’s so hard having roots in so many places and feeling like in a grey area. My mother is Italian-Dutch, and my father is Ghanaian. When two members of my African family that I never met came to Australia, it was basically ‘ Hey, that’s your sisters, make them feel at home'. They were calling me 'red', which is a derogatory term. I was like whoa?!?. Then I go to my white side of the family and they would be like ‘ Why don’t you change your appearance, straighten your hair, dress properly’ etc? I didn’t choose to be like this why can’t you accept me as I am anyway? It’s so hard to accept the differences between both sides cause they’re so different and contradicting at times.'
